Have you ever wanted to be someone else?
Our goal, as a group, is through the program Destination Imagination, we want you to answer "Not anymore". We are a new outreach group that is looking for some positive feedback on how to evolve this project into a global movement. Our aim is at 6-9 grade girls and how they start to change from acceptance into judgment. We want to go into all types of schools or groups and hold discussions with girls to see why they feel inadequate and want to change into someone else. During these discussions we will talk about who we really are under the theme of "I AM" and what is "self acceptance". Our self-acceptance exercise this year is to create a box, on all the outwardly facing surfaces they write their "good qualities" and on the inwardly facing surfaces they write their dreams for the future. We conclude this workshop exercise by unfolding the box and turning it inside out symbolizing the attainability of dreams if you think outside of the box of how you define yourself. Another ongoing project idea is to spell out I-A-M on a piece of paper and then fill the sheet with adjectives that they feel describe themselves (i.e. strong, brave, beautiful...etc.). After these are filled out by the class, our group is going to take a photo of them holding their sign feeling confident or doing the activity with an I AM pin. Some other ideas we have thought of are peer mediating, meaning pairing up teenagers with younger children or "tweens" and discussing how to feel good about yourself. One of our goals is to collectively get 2,500 photos of people wearing "I AM" buttons, signs that state the phrase "I AM", and boxes kids have created at workshops.
